Day 1. Copenhagen - Nuuk

With a flight from Denmark to Nuuk of only around 5 hours, you step directly into the world’s smallest capital. After arrival and check-in, it’s time for a guided city tour, providing a great introduction to the city as well as Greenland’s history and culture. Over the next two days, Nuuk will be your center for experiences filled with culture, history, and spectacular nature.

Meals: Complimentary meals and beverages are served on the flight from Denmark to Greenland.

Activity on Day 1 (included)

Guided City Tour of Nuuk

Nuuk is full of history and culture, and today you will go on a tour with a local guide who will tell you about Nuuk’s history and the unique Greenlandic culture. The tour provides an excellent introduction to Nuuk and Greenland, giving you a deeper understanding and appreciation when you continue exploring the city on your own.

We suggest, for example, visiting Greenland’s National Museum, where you can see the well-preserved Qilakitsoq mummies, offering fascinating insight into the Thule culture. Bait your hook and join us for a unique fishing adventure! Today’s experience is a very special fishing trip.

We sail deep into the fjord to an abandoned settlement, now home to a cozy restaurant. Although it is one of the most remote restaurants in the world, the food is exceptional, and the hosts take great care with the ingredients, including growing their own vegetables.

Along the way, we fish, and when you hand over your catch to the chef, you can watch as he fillets the fresh fish before creating the most delicious meal for you. It doesn’t get any fresher than this.

Today we fly onwards to Qaqortoq, where we check in at the town’s cozy hotel with views over the fjord and surrounding mountains.

Qaqortoq, which means “The White,” is South Greenland’s largest town with around 3,500 inhabitants and serves as an important educational center with a high school, business school, and folk high school.

The town is known for its colorful houses and vibrant art scene, including the Stone & Man art project, where artists such as Aka Høegh have carved sculptures directly into the rocks, making the town an open-air sculpture park.

In the town square, you can sit and enjoy Greenland’s oldest fountain while observing the activity at the board, where the day’s catch of fish, seal, and whale is sold.

From Qaqortoq, one of our boats will take you onward to Igaliku (approximately 1-hour sail). From the harbor in Igaliku, it’s a short walk to the Igaliku Bygdehotel, where you check in for the next two days. You then have the rest of the day to explore Igaliku at your own pace.

Igaliku is one of Greenland’s most beautiful settlements. The scattered stone houses lie on a protected, fertile plain at the head of a deep blue fjord, surrounded by rugged, barren mountains.

The area you visit is part of the unique Kujataa UNESCO World Heritage site, and your entrance to this UNESCO-protected cultural landscape is included in the price.

Day 5: History, Mountains, and Fjords

Igaliku is the starting point for some of the most beautiful and varied hikes in South Greenland. One such hike follows the river up to Lake 90 and continues onto the plateau. From here, you get fantastic views over the mouth of Qooroq Fjord, with stranded icebergs on the moraine and the mighty glacier at the head of the fjord.

The hike is also fascinating for geology enthusiasts, as there are excellent opportunities to find rock crystals and the shimmering “moonstone” (Labradorite).

Another popular route is the “Waterfall Hike”, which climbs into the mountains south of Igaliku and follows a series of waterfalls down toward Tunulliarfik Fjord. For those feeling adventurous, this hike can be combined with a manageable summit, Nuuluk (823 m), located just south of Igaliku.

Day 6: Icebergs, UNESCO Heritage, and Mountain Hiking

The day begins with a beautiful walk along the King’s Road from Igaliku to Itilleq (4 km). The path is a gravel road all the way, making it easy to follow.

From the pontoon dock in Itilleq, we take a boat trip to Qooroq Ice Fjord. This is an unforgettable journey among icebergs of all imaginable shapes and colors. We stop with a view of the calving glacier, turn off the boat engine, and enjoy the silence along with a drink made from more than 1,000-year-old inland ice!

From Qooroq, the trip continues to the Qassiarsuk UNESCO site, also known as Brattahlid, where Erik the Red settled in 982. The ruins from the Norse period are well-preserved, and the museum (Brattahlid) is highly recommended (entrance included). Today, the approximately 40 inhabitants of the settlement primarily make their living from sheep farming, but there is also a school, a church, and a shop.

Later in the day, we return to Igaliku the same way: first by boat, followed by the walk from Itilleq to Igaliku, where another night awaits at the cozy Bygdehotel.

Meals on Day 6: Breakfast included

Activity on Day 6 (Included)

Boat Trip to Qooroq Ice Fjord

On the boat trip, we cross the underwater moraine at the mouth of Qooroq Fjord. Many of the large icebergs run aground here, and we sail closely past them to get through and into the fjord. Once inside, a breathtaking view unfolds: thousands of icebergs, steep cliff walls, and at the head of the fjord, the massive glacier. The glacier releases no less than 200,000 tons of ice per day! Many of these icebergs display the most beautiful turquoise colors – a sight and experience of truly epic proportions.

During the trip, we collect ice and enjoy a drink accompanied by the crackling sound of air bubbles trapped for thousands of years as they burst in the glass.

Activity on Day 6 (Included)

Qassiarsuk (Brattahlid)

Today, sheep farmers work the very same lands that Erik the Red and his people settled over 1,000 years ago. Take a walk through the settlement, where you can feel the atmosphere of a small South Greenlandic community, while also seeing how the history of the Norse settlers and modern sheep farming come together.

Entrance to Brattahlid – a replica of Tjodhild’s Church and Erik the Red’s longhouse – is included in the tour.

Season and Practical Info

Greenland is a truly unique destination – majestic, yet not always easy to reach. That is part of its charm. Our travel advisors are happy to help you tailor a trip that matches your wishes and interests. As part of our guidance, we also advise you on the best time to plan your journey, ensuring you bring home the most memorable experiences.

When is the best time to travel?

This journey takes place from June to September – the perfect time to experience Greenland’s capital at its most vibrant and colorful. The summer months offer long, bright days, mild weather, and ideal conditions for exploring the fjords and getting up close to nature.

In June and July, the mountains are lush and green, and the power of the sun means the day never fully ends. It is a fantastic time to experience the majestic fjords and drifting icebergs along the coast – and to fish in the clear waters, where you might even catch your own dinner.

August continues with mild temperatures and abundant wildlife. It is a great month for whale watching, as they often frequent the waters around Nuuk. The city buzzes with life, where modern and historical Greenland coexist: from Greenlandic cuisine in cozy cafés to millennia-old Inuit artifacts at the National Museum.

September brings crisp colors and cooler air. Autumn arrives with golden tones in the mountains and a special calm over the city and fjords. Sailing, fishing, and fjord excursions are still possible, but with fewer travelers and a quieter, more reflective atmosphere.
