Tour Description

In our opinion, Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. Basalt columns and hot springs are evidence of the island’s past volcanic history. The coastal lowlands are renowned for diverse and abundant flora. The mountainous hinterland hosts the Lyngmark Glacier – one of the few places in Greenland where you can try dog sledding in summer.

You’ll travel to the unique Glacier Lodge Eqi – a small community of cabins facing the glacier Eqip Sermia, located just 80 km / 3-5 hours by boat north of Ilulissat.

Ilulissat is Greenland’s 3rd largest city and known as the Iceberg Capital. Admire these ice giants from the comfort of your fjord view room at Hotel Icefiord, located on the waterfront with a view of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ilulissat Icefjord.

Highlights

  • Icebergs, glaciers and Ilulissat Icefjord
  • Sailing with plenty of opportunity to see whales
  • Possibility to drive a dog sled on a glacier (subject to ice conditions and at additional cost)
  • Possibility for world-class walks along beautiful trails
  • Qeqertarsuaq ‘city’, known for its friendly and accommodating people
  • UNESCO World Heritage Listed destination

  • Disko Bay's most sought after destination: Glacier Lodge Eqi
  • Possibility to take a walk up to the ice cap from Glacier Lodge Eqi
  • Experience the contrast between a ‘big city’ and a settlement in Greenland

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1. Copenhagen - Aasiaat via Kangerlussuaq

It takes about 4 hours and 40 minutes to fly from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland’s main gateway. In Kangerlussuaq you change to a domestic flight heading to Aasiaat, Greenland’s 5th largest city.
In Aasiaat the main economic activity is fishing, although ship building and tourism are important to the local economy too. The city is an education centre with four schools. The renowned Danish artist Per Kirkeby lived in Aasiaat for a number of years. Before returning to Denmark he gifted 24 paintings to the city, which today hang in the assembly hall.
In Aasiaat you will stay at the Sømandshjem (Seamen’s Home), located a few metres from the harbour. Seamen's Home hotels are popular in Greenlandic towns, offering simple and comfortable accommodation.

Aasiaat.

Beautifully situated in the archipelago on the edge of Disko Bay, lies Greenland's 5th largest city, Aasiaat. Aasiaat is located in the south west corner of Disko Bay on an island. With approx. 3,100 inhabitants, it’s Greenland's 5th largest city.

Day 2. Aasiaat - Qeqertarsuaq

Departure from Aasiaat to Qeqertarsuaq in the afternoon by fast ferry (1½ hours) across Disko Bay. You’ll be staying 2 nights at Hotel Disko Island.
In our opinion, Qeqertarsuaq is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. Glacier covered basalt mountains dominate the hinterland, but on the coast you’ll find an abundance of flora, with angelica being one of the most prominent.
Qeqertarsuaq means "big island" and it is by far the largest off the coast of Greenland. There is only one town and a small settlement. The rest of the island is raw and impressive nature.

Qeqertarsuaq.

Qeqertarsuaq was founded in 1773 as a whaling station. The city has 850 inhabitants and is beautifully situated overlooking Disko Bay. You can travel to Qeqertarsuaq from both Ilulissat and Aasiaat.

Day 3. Qeqertarsuaq - Possibility for Dog Sledding

Today is at leisure, but if you’re fit enough, we recommend a guided dog sledding tour atop Lyngmark Glacier. Qeqertarsuaq is one of the few places in Greenland where you can go dog sledding in summer, if local conditions permit.

Note! The summer dog sledding season is from approx. 15 June - 15 August. We cannot guarantee sledding on Lyngmark Glacier outside these approx. dates due to unsuitable conditions.

Guided Excursion incl. Dog Sledding

Do you have a dream to go dog sledding in Greenland during summer, where you can also experience the Midnight Sun? Well, your dream can be fulfilled here.
It can never be compared to winter dog sledding, but it’s a good alternative for those who cannot come here in winter.
The hike ascent is approx. 900 meters.
REMEMBER HIKING BOOTS, not hiking shoes, but boots:
It’s important to mention that this hike is difficult. On a scale from 1 to 6 this is rated around 3-4, where 1 is a city tour and 6 is hard mountain climbing.
As one of the most beautiful hikes in Greenland, it usually takes 2½ to 4 hours each way.
Once you reach the top, just enjoy it, because the return trip may be hard if you’re not in peak condition.
If you have a bad back, knee or hip, you should carefully consider whether this is suitable for you.

Guided Excursion incl. Dog Sledding
The tour starts at 9:00 hrs (9 am) with a briefing before departure. You’ll travel through the town towards Uunartuarsuk, where the track to Uunartuarsuup Sermia begins. Your guide will lead the way, ensuring everyone is safe.
Lunch is served on arrival at the cottage by the glacier.
Dog sledding takes place during the afternoon, lasting approx. 1 - 1½ hours.
After a dinner consisting of Greenlandic specialities, you’ll be guided down from the glacier.
Duration: 10 - 12 hours, starting at. 09:00
Season: Approx. 15 June – 15 August
Participants: Min. 1 person
Price: DKK 1,600 (EUR 215)

NOTE! Like everywhere in Greenland, the weather and ice conditions dictate activities and transport. With safety of paramount importance, the guide and tour operators will decide whether the trip can be completed or not.

Day 4. Qeqertarsuaq - Ilulissat

The trip continues to the iceberg capital Ilulissat. On arrival in Ilulissat you’ll be transferred by Hotel Icefiord's bus to your home for the next 2 nights. The hotel has a good restaurant, but if you’d like something different, Ilulissat has a variety of cafes and restaurants offering burgers, Thai food and fine dining.
Ilulissat Icefjord was admitted to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2004, and was one of the first areas in the Arctic to be placed on the list. Although protected, we have special permits to sail among the icebergs and conduct helicopter tours.

Day 5. Ilulissat - Glacier Lodge Eqi

Early morning departure by boat to the calving glacier Eqi, a journey of about 3-5 hours. The boat will be positioned a safe distance in front of the glacier so you can hopefully witness a calving. Lunch is served on board. Early afternoon you’ll arrive at Glacier Lodge Eqi where you’ll be accommodated in a comfortable cottage with beautiful views of the calving glacier.
The stay is ‘all inclusive’, which means breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. There are no shops so no possibility to buy anything, but of course you can bring drinks or snacks from Ilulissat if you wish.

Day 6. Glacier Lodge Eqi

Enjoy the tranquillity at Glacier Lodge Eqi. The silence only being broken by new-born icebergs crashing into the water as Eqi calves. You have the opportunity to hike to and on the ice cap - a special and humbling experience to observe a large river of melt water flowing from the Greenland Ice Cap.
See the excursion description here.

Eqip Sermia – Eqi Glacier.

Imagine total silence being interrupted by thunder. But was that really thunder? No, that was the rumble and splash of ice calving from Eqi Glacier into the sea and making waves.

Day 7. Glacier Lodge Eqi - Ilulissat

Breakfast and lunch are served at Glacier Lodge Eqi. For those who wish, after breakfast there is a beautiful hike to the glacial moraine. Walk past the lagoon to the front of the glacier and bring your lunch sandwich from Café Victor. Enjoy your little picnic seated in the front row at the old edge of the moraine, overlooking the deep ice slopes of the glacier. The hiking trip typically takes about 4 hours, returning to Glacier Lodge Eqi in time for the cruise back to Ilulissat. The boat departs Eqi at 14:00 hrs (2 pm), with arrival in Ilulissat around 19:00 hrs (7 pm). Two more nights at Hotel Icefiord.

Ilulissat - enourmouse icebergs

For many enthusiasts, Ilulissat (formally Jakobshavn) is considered “the Navel of the World” when discussing travel to Greenland.

Day 8. Ilulissat - City Tour and Sermermiut Hiking

Breakfast while admiring the beautiful view of the icefjord.
This morning you’ll take a guided city walk to gain insight into everyday life and a little about local history, nature and of course the fishing industry.

Afternoon guided hike to the old Inuit settlement Sermermiut, overlooking the icefjord mouth. Beautifully situated on the outskirts of Ilulissat, the hike is about 5 km and reasonably easy.
UNESCO’s addition of Ilulissat Icefjord and Sermermiut to its World Heritage List has had a significant positive impact to the region. Your guide will explain what UNESCO conservation means and why it’s so important.
