ⓘ
Did you know?
In Greenlandic, Disko Island is called Qeqertarsuaq, meaning “the big island”.

Qeqertarsuaq – The Big Island

Disko Island lies in Disko Bay and is Greenland’s largest island. Roughly the size of Zealand, Denmark’s largest island, and with a shape that, with a little imagination, resembles a discus, the island takes its Danish name from this resemblance.

The town of Qeqertarsuaq, formerly known as Godhavn, is located on the island’s southern coast. The island is also home to the small settlement of Kangerluk (Diskofjord), 35 km to the northwest.

Many visitors first see Disko Island from a distance, where its striking basalt mountains rise almost 1,000 metres above sea level and can be seen from the mainland. Formed by volcanic activity, the mountains give the island its distinctive appearance. In the southern part of the island lies Lyngmark Glacier, where ice and snow shape the landscape throughout the year.

Sauna on Black Beach

Are you a winter swimmer, or would you like to try taking a dip in the Arctic Ocean? At Greenland’s only black sand beach, you can take a plunge into the cold sea and then warm up in the sauna at Hotel Disko Island. Let yourself unwind as you enjoy the views of the icebergs floating in Disko Bay

Kuannit

Nature on Disko Island

Greenland is known for its spectacular landscapes, and Disko Island has a natural character all of its own. Formed by volcanic activity, the island features distinctive dark red basalt mountains and a black sand beach that contrast sharply with the sea. The nutrient-rich soil supports lush vegetation that differs considerably from that found elsewhere in Greenland. Here, you’ll find extensive green areas and plenty of kvan (wild angelica), an aromatic plant.

Things to do on Disko Island

With its distinctive green and lush landscape, Disko Island is an ideal place to lace up your hiking boots and explore on foot. There are several excellent hiking routes, including trails to the scenic Kuannit area, the Qorlortorsuaq waterfall and Lyngmark Glacier. From the glacier, you can enjoy exceptional views over the town of Qeqertarsuaq and spend the night at the wilderness lodge Disko Mountain Lodge.

In winter, you can explore the island on dog sledding trips or snowmobile excursions to Lyngmark Glacier.

Gastronomy

Taste the wild flavours of the Island

Restaurant Disko Island takes its inspiration from Greenland’s natural environment and the ingredients found around Qeqertarsuaq. Local produce meets Nordic culinary traditions, with the season and available ingredients shaping the menu.

During the summer season, the menu features wild herbs, mushrooms and berries, as well as fresh local fish and shellfish. These are combined with reindeer, musk ox and Nordic vegetables.

A meal here is an opportunity to discover Greenland’s natural larder and experience how ingredients gathered from the surrounding landscape make their way onto the plate.

Snekrabber

Snow Crab – A Local Delicacy

Disko Island is known for its snow crab, and snow crab fishing is an important local industry. At Restaurant Disko Island, you can sample this local delicacy, served with a flavourful sauce.

You’ll need to extract the meat from the shell yourself. It’s a fun and sometimes slightly challenging dining experience, but the reward is deliciously tender, juicy crab meat.
