Tour Description

Spring and summer in Greenland bring bright days and relatively mild temperatures when the sun comes out. The usual rhythm of day and night quickly fades away, as activities take place regardless of the time of day in almost constant daylight. Most people only head to bed when they feel they have had their fill of impressions – perhaps from breaching whales, the silence or the low sun shining on the giant icebergs.

At this time of year, the snow is beginning to melt and a “new” Greenland emerges. The mosquitoes have not arrived yet, at least not in large numbers, and in the middle of the day you can find shelter from the slightly cool breeze and enjoy the sunshine. Disko Bay is at its best and welcomes you with great experiences.

We begin our journey in Ilulissat with a guided town tour, offering a great introduction to Greenland, its history and culture.

From here, we continue by boat to Qasigiannguit – a Greenlandic town often overlooked by tourists. Here, you will enjoy two rewarding day hikes, with the opportunity for a dip in the sea on one of them. Whales can be spotted in the waters around Qasigiannguit – even from the hotel terrace. So, if you spot a whale – a blow, a back or a tail fin – ring the whale bell!

In Qasigiannguit, you will also gain an insight into the culture and history of Disko Bay through stories about sled dogs and musk oxen, as well as a visit to the town museum.

From Qasigiannguit, we continue to Disko Island and the former whaling town of Qeqertarsuaq. Wherever you are in town, you have views of either the sea, the mountains or the harbour – perhaps all three at once.

On Disko Island, we hike along the coast to the beautiful Kuannit area, weather permitting. Here, the Greenlandic angelica plant thrives around warm springs, while symmetrical basalt columns create striking sculptural rock formations. In Qeqertarsuaq, we will also sample one of the island’s specialities: impressive snow crabs!

The final stop on our journey is once again Ilulissat. The boats around the Icefjord either carry the season’s first visitors, admiring the magnificent ice giants, or fishermen bringing up cod and Greenland halibut from the nutrient-rich waters. Of course, we will hike out to the impressive Kangia Icefjord, which plays an important role in the lives of both locals and visitors.

You can admire the icebergs both on foot and from the water, explore Ilulissat and, not least, enjoy a delicious farewell dinner featuring local specialities.

The adventure begins with a flight from Copenhagen to Ilulissat – the capital of icebergs. Upon arrival, we are met by our local guide and transferred to the atmospheric Hotel Icefiord, located right on the shores of Disko Bay with views of drifting icebergs.

Notes on difficulty level and hikes:

The following factors are important to keep in mind for each hike, as they affect the experience of the hikes.

Terrain:
There are four hiking days on this trip. In Greenland, there are not many constructed trails, so hiking typically takes place through varied and uneven mountain terrain. The hikes do not involve large elevation differences. The terrain usually alternates between soil, stones, gravel, bedrock, tundra, ice, and snow, so waterproof and warm hiking boots are essential. Trekking poles are strongly recommended as they help maintain balance on uneven ground and reduce strain on legs and knees. They are also a great support if conditions are slippery.

Requirements:
We aim to organize the hikes so that everyone can walk at their own pace. Participation in each individual hike is optional. If you would like additional short hikes on your own, the local guide can recommend several good options.

Activities

SAILING

In addition to the hikes, there are three scenic boat trips around Disko Bay. We travel on scheduled passenger boats, and every crossing comes with an iceberg guarantee!

The boats are either Targa vessels or steel-hulled ships, all offering plenty of space both indoors and outdoors. We always travel on passenger-certified vessels in Greenland.

On tour with a local guide

Please note – there is no permanent Topas tour leader on this trip. Instead, the local guide affiliated with the hotels in Qeqertarsuaq, Qasigiannguit and Ilulissat will be your point of contact on site and will guide the city tours and hikes mentioned in the program. Please be aware that other participants (people not traveling with the group) may join the hikes and city walks.

In Ilulissat, Hotel Icefiord and Disko Line handle all transfers between airport, harbor and hotel. In Qeqertarsuaq and Qasigiannguit, luggage is transported between ship and hotel both ways, and trip participants follow the local guide the short distance between harbor and hotel.

Accommodation

QEQERTARSUAQ
On Disko Island we stay at Hotel Disko Island in the town of Qeqertarsuaq. Hotel Disko Island consists partly of a number of small houses in the town center, where the rooms have their own bath and toilet. The town's former restaurant has been renovated with large windows and a view of the marina and mountains. A large terrace with the same view has also been built by the restaurant. The restaurant belongs to the hotel, and the hotel's reception is in the same building.

QASIGIANNGUIT
In Qasigiannguit we stay at Hotel Diskobay, which sits front-row to Disko Bay with a view of Disko Island. In the period May–September, whales can often be seen in the bay below the hotel. Hotel Diskobay also has a large terrace facing the bay and a restaurant with a view. All rooms have their own bath and toilet.

ILULISSAT
Hotel Icefiord has one of Ilulissat's best locations, right on the cliffs out toward the sea. From the hotel's restaurant and large terrace you can enjoy the view of Disko Island and the ever-changing formations of icebergs around town. Hotel Icefiord is a modern hotel with various room categories. By default you'll stay in standard rooms, but you have the option to upgrade (if space allows) to a Deluxe Explorer room. The Deluxe Explorer rooms have their own balcony facing Disko Bay and a skylight, so you can lie in bed and experience the midnight sun. The price for the upgrade is listed in the section "Not included."

Everywhere we stay in shared twin rooms. Single rooms are available at all three hotels for a supplement listed in the section "Not included."

Meals

Included meals are marked on each day in the detailed itinerary as Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner. Meals that are not included are not mentioned in the daily program.

On this trip we focus on giving you a culinary experience with good Greenlandic ingredients as well — this can include fish, shellfish, reindeer, muskox, berries and mushrooms – and drinks made with inland ice!

Three dinners are included in the trip price, where you get to taste Greenlandic specialties, including snow crab on Disko Island.

Lunch is included on 5 days of the trip in the form of a packed lunch, which we have the opportunity to enjoy out in nature.

On the Air Greenland flights between Denmark and Greenland, free meals and beverages are served on board.

Flights and local transport

Climate

Weather Ilulissat

The average daytime temperature in early summer (May/June) in Disko Bay (on land) is 3–8°C (37–46°F). The temperature given is the 24-hour average. Nights can be relatively cold (down to freezing or even somewhat below), but as the sun gains strength during the day, the temperature rises. Because of the sun and the dry air, the temperature feels warmer than in the rest of Europe. Rain/snow can occur and sometimes settles as a thin white layer on the mountaintops.

Daylight Ilulissat

There is midnight sun in Disko Bay from May 21 to July 24. Equal length of day and night occurs again in late September. When it's light around the clock (midnight sun), it changes most people's sense of time, since it can be hard to tell what time it is based on feel alone. On the other hand, you get many hours of daylight for various activities, which in principle can take place in the middle of the night.

Currency and credit cards

VISA/Dankort is accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, we recommend bringing a small amount of cash (DKK) as backup.

Wi-Fi and Mobile Coverage

There is mobile coverage in Ilulissat, but not necessarily outside the town in the mountains or at sea. Wi-Fi is available at the hotel.

If you need a Greenlandic SIM card, we recommend Tusass eSIM packages. See prices and packages here.

The Area

ILULISSAT — "THE PLACE WITH ICEBERGS"
Ilulissat is Greenland's 3rd largest town and is called Jakobshavn in Danish. Ilulissat is also neighbor to the UNESCO World Heritage site Ilulissat Icefjord/Kangia, which at over 60 km (37 miles) in length is an impressive sight.

DISKO ISLAND – QEQERTARSUAQ
Disko Island is the largest Greenlandic island and about the size of Zealand. Around 1,000 people live in Qeqertarsuaq, and just under 10 people live in the settlement of Kangerluk, which is a day's journey by dog sled from Qeqertarsuaq (or a couple of hours by dinghy in summer). The rest of the island consists of uninhabited wilderness in the form of mountains, valleys and permanent ice caps atop the basalt mountains. In Greenlandic, Qeqertarsuaq means "the big island," and the Danish name Godhavn refers to the beautiful, good natural harbor by which the town is located.

QASIGIANNGUIT

The town lies south of Ilulissat Icefjord in a natural area with mountains, tundra plains, green passes, blue fjords, and peaks with views of Disko Bay and Disko Island. The area is particularly well suited for hiking. Qasigiannguit means "small speckled seals," and the Danish name is Christianshåb. The town on Disko Bay has about 1,200 inhabitants.

Who travels on group tours with Topas?

On our group tours you will meet solo travellers, singles, couples, friends, and families. What unites them is a desire to experience the world and be active in good company. It is often the combination of active days, small shared achievements, and evening conversations at the dinner table that creates a strong sense of community.

If you are going on your first solo trip, it can feel like a big step. But you will quickly discover that the group consists of people with the same curiosity and passion for travel as you.

Important to know

The trip is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
Not sure whether the trip is right for you? Feel free to contact us before booking if you're unsure about the physical demands of the trip, or if you have specific physical, mental or social needs that may affect your participation. Together we can assess whether the trip is the right choice for you.

Packing list

We have prepared a packing list to help you when packing for your trip. The packing list contains general information as well as what is useful to bring on this specific journey.

The packing list should be seen as a guide to what you CAN bring, and not as a list of items you MUST bring, as individual needs and preferences may vary. However, our experience shows that the items listed below are useful to bring.

Luggage

Bring a daypack to use on the hikes. We recommend a backpack with a good support system, including a hip belt and chest strap, to take weight off your shoulders and back. Consider bringing this backpack as carry-on luggage on the plane.

It's most convenient to pack your gear in a soft duffel bag or similar, as this is easiest to handle during transfers and on board the ship. It is possible, but definitely not recommended, to bring a suitcase.

Boots

It's important to bring good hiking boots with a stiff sole (e.g., Vibram) and good ankle support to avoid ankle injuries! This is a must. It's also important that your hiking boots are waterproof, as some of the trails cross damp terrain. Make sure your boots are properly broken in.

It is not possible to complete this trip in ordinary sneakers or walking shoes.

It's a good idea to travel wearing your boots from home, or to keep them in your carry-on, in case your checked luggage is delayed.

Other footwear

Light footwear (e.g., sneakers) is nice to have after the day's hike.

Water bottle

Each participant can bring one or more bottles, as there are several opportunities to refill water along the hiking routes.

Trekking poles

How much benefit you get from using trekking poles — and whether you use one or two — is very individual. You'll have to find out what works for you. That said, the advantages are many, and should the pole(s) become a hindrance in certain terrain, they can be strapped to your backpack — telescopic trekking poles are therefore strongly recommended.

In general, the following advantages of trekking poles can be mentioned:
  • Significantly improves balance on uneven and/or muddy terrain, in snow (mountain passes, etc.), and when crossing streams.
  • When used correctly, trekking poles significantly reduce strain on the knees, both on ascents and descents.
Trekking poles must be packed in checked luggage on the flight. Remember to protect the tips so they don't damage the luggage.

Hiking clothing

  • 2 pairs of thick hiking socks
  • Possibly 2 pairs of thin liner socks
  • 1–2 pairs of lightweight hiking pants
  • Moisture-wicking base layer, possibly wool underwear
  • 1–2 long-sleeved wool sweaters
  • 1–2 sweat-absorbing T-shirts
  • 1 warm sweater/heavy fleece jacket/down jacket
  • Wind- and waterproof jacket with hood
  • Breathable rain pants
  • Warm hat and scarf
  • Warm gloves/mittens
  • Cap or wide-brimmed hat
  • Good sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF

Other clothing

  • Travel clothes
  • T-shirts
  • Shirts/long-sleeved blouse
  • Socks
  • Underwear

Miscellaneous

  • Passport, currency, health insurance card and travel documents
  • Toiletries
  • Medication for personal use, plus sports tape, blister plasters and possibly a knee brace
  • Camera, charger and possibly extra batteries
  • Hand sanitizer (available at pharmacies or Matas)
  • Energy bars/favorite snacks
  • Thermos, if you'd like to bring your own tea/coffee on the hikes
  • Waterproof bags to protect clothing in your backpack from rain
  • Possibly earplugs (if you'd like to sleep undisturbed at night)
  • Possibly a money belt
  • Possibly binoculars
  • Possibly wet wipes
  • Possibly laundry detergent for hand-washing
  • Possibly a pocketknife (not in carry-on luggage during the flight)
  • Possibly swimwear (if you're a winter swimmer, a dip at Paradise Bay near Qasigiannguit might tempt you!)

Specific trip notes

There is NOT a dedicated Topas tour leader on this trip, but there will be a local guide affiliated with the hotels in Qeqertarsuaq, Qasigiannguit and Ilulissat, respectively, who will guide the city tours and hikes mentioned in the program and will be your point of contact on site.

In Ilulissat, Hotel Icefiord handles all transfers between airport, harbor and hotel. In Qeqertarsuaq and Qasigiannguit, luggage is transported between ship and hotel both ways. The local guide accompanies guests on the short distance from ship to hotel both ways.

On this trip, you'll sleep in good beds at all accommodations (including duvet, pillow, bed linen and towel).
