Upernavik is joined by 9 settlements which form Avannaata Kommunia.
The population numbers approx. 1,000 people and the main industry is fishing. Some of the country's toughest fishermen come from here.

The city does not have a hotel, but there are rental homes of good standard. The view is good almost wherever you look.

The city's museum is the nation's northernmost open-air museum, consisting of several buildings in the old town.
